Why Do Transformation Projects Fail?

Transformation. It’s a concept that is everywhere these days. Unfortunately, many of these transformation initiatives eventually fail. According to recent IDC research, 6 in 10 CEO’s are under pressure to deliver a successful digital transformation strategy. Yet IDC’s research also showed that many organizations get stuck at the implementation of the strategy – where they must optimize and scale the solution across the organization.

So, why does this happen? Why do transformation projects fail?

Ed Maddock, CTO at iGrafx, recently spoke with Ian Hawkins, Editor at PEX Network, about this exact topic. Essentially, Ian asked what the difference is between transformation projects that work and projects that fall flat.

Ed began by explaining that the term “project” is a big part of the issue – it is not about just one project, but instead it needs to be an ongoing effort. An organization must figure out what projects you have to execute in order to achieve the goals you have set. And they must understand that you cannot just throw technology at particular problem – instead you need to understand the key processes, their impact and their interrelationships. He continues by explaining why failure occurs when organizations do not have the framework to understand how to build continuous business transformation and that success begins by having a process first view in place for long term ROI.
